shipwreck-abstract-seascape
Shipwreck | Original seascape painting full of drama

Storm, Waves & Maritime Drama

I have been playing around with the juxtaposition of abstract and figurative elements in my paintings since 2016. The dynamism of abstract expressionism is a particularly powerful form of expression, particularly in an achromatic colour palette.

Created in 2022, Shipwreck is possibly my most powerful example of this juxtaposition of elements to date.

I suppose the title strongly sets the scene. The first thing to grab you are the jagged rock formations followed by the cross forms of the ship's masts reaching for the dark sky behind the rocks. Then your gaze is drawn straight down to the turgid sea in the bottom right of the picture and back up to the three survivors.

This painting is packed with symbolism — hope, religion, fear, fragility of life. It is a painting with a happy ending of course. We see three survivors comforting each other as they look towards the shipwreck behind the headland. For all we know, there are more survivors who have been delivered to a beach by the power of the sea.

As I think about survivors at sea, my thoughts were drawn to the recent celebrations of the RNLI bicentenary. A remarkable achievement!

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) celebrated its historic 200th anniversary (bicentenary) on March 4 2024 marking two centuries of saving lives at sea. Since its founding in 1824, the charity's volunteer crews and lifeguards have saved over 146,000 lives.

As I have lived with this painting in the years since its creation I have discovered even more imagery and narratives buried within its depths. It has been as much of a joy to live with it as it did to paint it.

What do you think?
