Rescue is a dark and dramatic original painting ironically full of happiness.
Exclusive to this web site, this painting is part of a large body of work featuring crowds of people interacting with their environment and each other.
I spent a couple of summers in the beautiful bay town of Robin Hood's bay on the Yorkshire coast of England. Robin Hood's Bay is renowned as a former haunt of smugglers who used to land their contraband and transport it through the cellars and streets of the close knit cottages.
This is a rugged landscape which was prone to ships running aground on the rocky scars which reach out to sea.
This painting is inspired by the adjacent bay of Boggle Hole which is a steep sided cove and home to the local YHA Youth Hostel. It is a secluded cove which gets cut off by the tides and that got me thinking; what if someone got into difficulties?
So I launched into a daydream and let my imagination wander which resulted in this painting featuring a floundering swimmer being helped by a crowd of rescuers on the beach.
As with many dramatic stories, this one had a happy ending which culminated in a piss up in the Bay Hotel to celebrate.
Aah I do love a happy ending.
